Why watch this film?
A seventeen-year-old girl experiences a sexual awakening when she falls head over heels in love with her female teacher. She writes this down in her diary, and writes so well, vividly and recognizably that both mother and grandmother think the book should be published. Without taking into that the girl has only written it to keep the crush alive for herself.
"Dreams (2024) is, along with Sex (2024) and Love (2024), part of a trilogy by the Norwegian filmmaker that, as the titles suggest, deals with the complexities of human relationships, sexuality, and social norms. In this film, we follow a young woman who, after falling hopelessly in love with her French teacher, decides to write it in her diary to preserve the memory. But her life takes a turn when the private matter is discovered by her mother and grandmother, who are initially shocked but become fascinated by the literary qualities of her writing. From here, as the characters wrestle with the implications and consequences of publishing the material, the director crafts a story that reflects on the clashes between the reality of relationships and romantic ideals, balancing humor, melancholy, and a deeply reflective tone. Beyond connecting with the themes of the rest of the trilogy, it evokes the also Norwegian The Worst Person in the World (2021)."
